Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend is Never Easy

Goldie and her BrianLast week was a very difficult week for our family, for we had to make the terrible decision to put our beloved golden retriever, Goldie down. She had been a member of our family for a little over ten years, and out of all the dogs I have had in my life she was the apple of my eye. We got Goldie from the local pound after our youngest son, who had been lobbying us for over a year finally convinced Dan to let him have a dog. Sean had wanted only a golden retriever, and after spending days on the phone with no luck tracking one down, I decided that giving a poor homeless dog a loving home would make my son just as happy. As luck would have it, the pound had Goldie...

We believe Goldie had been mistreated in her former home, as she was afraid of loud voices, and rolled up newspapers and would run from the room if the noise got too loud. But as soon as she saw our middle son, Brian, she was in love...She followed him everywhere and slept in his room. Brian spoiled her rotten. He would take her to Burger King to get chicken nuggets and she loved nothing better but than to go in the car with him. There where days when Goldie would insist on going with him. I would laugh as I listen to him try and reason with her...and in the end he would usually end up driving her around the block before he went out for the evening.

When we first got Goldie, she didn't bark, so Brian decided to spend a month and a half teaching her how.  So whenever the doorbell rang she would bark like crazy.  Problem was Goldie liked to spend her days lounging on the front lawn watching the world go bye. She scared the begeezes out of more than one deliveryman when they made the mistake of ringing the doorbell. She could careless who came in the yard AS LONG AS THEY DID NOT RING THE BELL! Soon they all had her number, and would place the packages on the front steps and give her a nice pat on the head as they walk back to their trucks..

Goldie was a silly dog, who was afraid of bumblebees and would spend hours looking for chipmunks. When I called dinner, she would be the first one in the kitchen, lying down in the corner while the rest of the family ate. But what got me most about this dog was she smiled. Goldie smiled all the time. You would come home from a long day, and there she was, happy to see you, with this BIG SMILE on her face.

Last week she stopped smiling. We brought her to the vets, who ran lots of tests and the news was not good. So we took Goldie home for one last weekend, where she got lots of rides in the car and all the chicken nuggets she could eat. The vet came over Sunday, and with Goldie surrounded by her family she took her last breath looking into her beloved Brian's eyes.
